Clark School of Mathematics, Science and Technology has made application to become a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. The first year as a candidate school was the 2008-2009 school year. Several Clark teachers and principal, Mrs. Dianne McWain, have already attended IB MYP Training while other teachers are scheduled to attend training sessions during the summer months.
The International Baccalaureate Programmes (primary years programme, middle years programme, and diploma programme) aim to promote international understanding, responsible citizenship, and the importance of learning how to learn with student-centered inquiry and communication. To that purpose, the MYP curriculum is a framework of academic challenge along with life skills appropriate to the age group to encourage students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world. The program supports the development of communication skills to promote inquiry and encourage students to become critical and reflective thinkers.
The Middle Years Programme emphasizes the development of the whole child: affective, cognitive, creative and physical with the awareness that children learn both in and outside of the classroom. The fundamental concepts of MYP are intercultural awareness, holistic education and communication. The IB program aims to instill a positive attitude to learning by challenging students to solve problems, show creativity and resourcefulness and participate actively in their communities. Students will also be involved in a service learning project required as part of the IB program.
Both Davidson High School and Murphy High School currently offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (11th and 12th grade). Many Clark students apply to those programs for high school since they are open to students across Mobile County. The IB Middle Years Programme will help students better prepare for their high school experience, be it at one of those schools or elsewhere.
