A School of Choice

The Mobile County Public “Schools of Choice” offer students the choice of participating in specialized programs on all grade levels K-12. The magnet schools are designed to provide unique program offerings that meet a variety of needs and will attract students voluntarily. 

Program Design

Clark-Shaw Magnet stresses higher order thinking skills in a specialized advanced curriculum. Advanced and regular courses (in non-magnet areas) are offered as well as many electives. The program is designed to provide students with a highly structured academic course of study that emphasizes concepts and skills fundamental to success in mathematics, science and technology. Another unique feature of Clark-Shaw is the nurturing environment that permits students to develop to their maximum potential.

The Magnet Student

The Clark-Shaw Magnet Program is designed for students who are interested in pursuing a curriculum emphasizing mathematics, science and technology. This is an accelerated school that best meets the needs of students who:

  • achieve at or above grade level
  • maintain a 70 average or above in all classes
  • desire a rigorous academic program with a math and science focus
  • are well disciplined
  • have good study habits
  • complete homework assignments regularly
  • respect authority, themselves and others
  • have parents that support the philosophy, dress code and code of conduct  

Core Curriculum Required Courses:

English/Language Arts – regular or Honors

Mathematics- Core Plus 6th, Pre-Algebra 7th, and Algebra I or Honors Algebra I

Science- Advanced 6thand 7th, Introduction to Biology 8 or Honors Biology I

Social Studies

Health/Physical Education 

Electives (7th and 8th grades)

Art (Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced)                   Band (Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced)

French- 7th grade, 8th grade Honors French I            Robotics

Pre-Engineering Career Discoveries                            PBL(Project Based Learning)

Staff Qualifications

The faculty and staff of Clark Shaw Magnet were carefully chosen through an application/interview process that sought to match training and interest with proven classroom performance. In addition, mathematics and science teachers have received specialized training in using techniques designed to motivate students’ interest in those subjects.

Special Education Services

At Clark-Shaw special education services are provided for gifted students, Speech/Language Impaired and for Written Expression. Reasonable accommodations may be made as determined by the IEP/GEP Team, but curriculum modifications in core classes cannot be made due to the accelerated nature of the magnet school’s program.

Extended Day Services

Club 180, an Extended Day Program, is available for a nominal fee from 2:45-6:00 p.m.


Transportation is provided from designated bus stops throughout Mobile County Public School System to Clark-Shaw. Students will be transported from their district schools to Clark-Shaw.

Conduct and Dress

Appropriate behavior is mandatory for Clark-Shaw students and uniform dress is required. Each student and his/her parents must sign a commitment to abide by the school’s philosophy, dress code and code of conduct.

Selection Process

An online application must be completed prior to admission to all magnet schools. Placement is based on random selection by computer. Applications are available online at the school system’s website  The first draw for magnet school slots will be in early April.
